Why Do People Prefer Brand Name Products?

When given people are given the choice to buy a brand name product or a lower priced “no-name”/generic product, they often prefer brand name products. They are not very concerned about how much they spend for Nike sportswear, Poma Shoes and Oshkosh children’s clothing. But when it comes to cheaper no-name products they look down upon them and consider them unusable. So many generic products end up on the clearance or reduction shelves. Why do people think brand names are so much better than generic? Are they really better? Perhaps we have been tricked into believing that generic or cheaper products are unworthy?

More than a hundred years ago, businesses started the idea of branding products so that people would find it easier to know the difference between premium manufactured products and the products which are cheaper and less known.

Manufacturers of the late 1800′s, created packaging, labels and advertising so that customers would easily recognize and find their favourite products on the store shelves. This identical branding method continues to be used to allow people all over the world to easily identify the superior quality products of America over less trustworthy products on the marketplace.

Traditionally, the USA is recognized for their high quality brand name products which enable them to have the power to charge higher prices. People worldwide know just what they are receiving when they buy from the US.

It is standard for product brands to be reliable and high in value. When a customer trusts a brand name product they will most likely purchase the product/service repeatedly. Therefore, repeat customers raise the profits of brand products much more than generic brands.

When a customer chooses a product, their memory is triggered and they remember a television commercial they saw, or a jingle they heard on the radio or the big sign they see while driving home from work every day. This makes them familiar with the product more than inexpensive products. Even if you are not in a store, some of the jingles you have heard get stuck in your head and you find yourself singing or humming them.

Does branding a product work with internet sales? Branding a web site is more essential than the branding of separate products. Studies reveal that online buyers look more for sites that they can trust and sell what they want at lower prices than the actual brands that are for sale. Therefore, web sites which sell products need to take extra time to advertise their website more than the product itself.

The purpose of most advertising methods is to learn about what customers are searching for and make it available to them. In conventional retail stores, superior qualities branded products are very important. At the same time, people who buy products on the internet are looking for better than ever quality web sites.

How to Make Your Restaurant Stand Out

So you have a nice restaurant with good food and service, and yet the dining room is not always full. You spend quite a lot of money in marketing and wonder why it’s not working for you.

Well let me tell you, there are many other restaurants with good food, good service and a nice ambience, so your place might not be as special in the eyes of your customers as you want it to be.

Put yourself in the shoes of your customers. Why should they come to your restaurant rather than visit one of your competitors?

Well, the truth is that if you stand out from other local options, they probably won’t.

You need to think hard and long about your place and what it makes it special or different from any other restaurant. And believe me, it is different. No two restaurants are the same (except in the case of franchises, which – by definition – want to look and operate exactly the same).

So what makes your restaurant special or different?

You need to articulate the essence of your restaurant, the essence of your offering, so that people will know why they should come to your place instead of your competitors. This is called your Unique Selling Proposition (or USP for short).

You need to create and announce a USP that identifies your restaurant and makes it a unique establishment.

So how can you do that? Don’t worry, I will help you out. Just follow these easy three steps and you’ll be on your way to creating your own USP:

1.    Make a list of the real benefits or advantages that you currently offer to your clients.

Think about what’s special about your restaurant. Is it your food? Your wine selection? Your service? Your location? Your decorations? Do you offer live music? Do you have a large menu selection? Open kitchen? Etc.

Ask your customers, your employees and your providers what makes your restaurant special or different. Perhaps you have a unique recipe that people really appreciate and come to enjoy, or perhaps your chef comes out of the kitchen and greets the clients, or you have bilingual servers who can communicate with foreign travelers in their native languages.

Some aspects that can help you determine your USP are:

o    A wide variety of dishes in the menu

o    Unique, ethnic meals or menu items

o    Restaurant especially designed to accommodate families (with a play area or toys or entertainment for children, etc.)

o    Reasonable prices

o    Quality of the food

o    Originality of the dishes

o    Impeccable presentation

o    Excellent service (good is not good enough: it must be excellent to make an impact!)

o    Wide wine selection or special hard-to-find wines

o    Wide beer selection or special hard-to-find beers

o    Specialty cocktails

o    Open kitchen where people can see/talk to your cooks

o    Beautifully decorated place

o    Live music

o    Candles on the tables

o    Cloth linens

o    Original art on the walls

o    Any other distinct advantage that you may have or can provide that your competitors don’t provide.

2.    Make a second list of benefits or special things that your competitors offer but you don’t.

For example, do they have a big place and your restaurant is small? Do they offer a full bar and you don’t? Do they have a super-chef with a reputation that you cannot offer? Do they have an excellent location while your place is out of the way?

3.    List the ways that you could improve upon your competitor’s unique advantages.

If their place is big and yours is small, you can use this to your advantage by stating that you offer “A unique experience in a cozy atmosphere where you will receive very personalized treatment”.

Or the opposite – if your place is large, you can say “We have facilities large enough to accommodate your office party or your special occasion”.

Or you could compensate for not having a full bar by offering an extensive and excellent selections of wine.

If you have a great location, say that you are “conveniently located in the middle of the city, within walking distance from…”

Or if you are out of the way, you can always say “our restaurant offers free parking and it’s worth it the trip, since you will surely enjoy an extraordinary dining experience…”

You get the idea, right?

So write down the top five advantages and/or differentiators that make your place unique. Then combine them into one short sentence or phrase.

This will become your USP

Once you come up with your USP, write it down, review it and edit it several times to make it as clear and complete as possible.

Write your new USP in a one paragraph statement. You may have problems expressing it concisely and clearly. It may take a few paragraphs. That’s OK.

Now you need to edit down all the fluff (trim the fat), and focus on the core message until you have a clear and unique USP that people will recognize and immediately identify with your restaurant. It needs to become one memorable sentence.

Share it with your employees; share it with your clients. Announce it to the world by using it in all your marketing and sales materials…

Remember, attention spans are getting shorter these days, so your USP must be short and memorable.

If you follow some of these techniques, and come up with a powerful and memorable UPS, you will be ahead of your competitors who simply announce their restaurants in the most traditional ways.

People respond to short and remarkable messages. If you can articulate the essence of your place in a few precise words, and consistently use them to promote your business, you should be able to stand out from the crowd.

20 Conditioning Exercises You Can Do at Home

Doing an effective whole body conditioning and weight loss workout can be done entirely at home without any fancy equipment. A couple of dumbbells is all you will need. (Even if you don’t have dumbbells there is usually something lying around the house that is heavy enough to substitute in for them)

Here is a list of 20 exercises you can do right in your own home for a great whole body conditioning and fat loss workout.

Exercises:

Group 1:

Bodyweight Squats

Bulgarian Split Squats

Y-Squats

Prisoner Squat

Reverse Lunge

Step Ups

One Leg “Get Ups”

Group 2:

Push Ups

Push Up and Point

Mountain Climbers

Decline Push Ups

Push Ups/Stick Ups

Step Up and Press

Squat and Press

Group 3:

Plank

Side Plank

Curl and Press

One Arm Rows

Bird Dogs

One Leg Deadlifts

Pick one exercise from each group and do them all back to back for a mini circuit of 3 exercises. Do each exercise for a timed interval of 10 seconds for a total of 30 seconds per mini circuit.

As you get better at them work up to doing each exercise for 20 seconds for a total of 60 seconds per mini circuit.

Take 30-60 seconds rest between mini circuits.

For beginners do a total of 3 mini circuits to start. Working up to 4 or 5 as you get better at them.

Once you’re ready to move to the next level add a second mini circuit by choose 3 different exercises (one from each grouping). Do your second mini circuit with the same time of work to rest ratio as your fist.

If you feel you are already at an advanced level you can add one or two more mini circuits up to a total of 4 mini circuits. These 20 exercises are just an example of what is possible, there are dozens more that would work in this mini circuit style, you can incorporate any exercise that you like into these mini circuits. This style of workout is a great complete whole body conditioning and fat loss program you can do right at home in under 45 minutes. I encourage you to give it a try and see that you can get a great workout done right in your own living room.
